Instructors

We are lucky to have 3  dan grade UKCC coaches at the club. These are:

Dave_profileDave Southby (6th Dan)Dave has competed in the judo world at the highest levels. He was a member of the British Olympic squad for 8 years, held the title as British No.1 for 6 years, won two Commonwealth Gold Medals at light middleweight and achieved success at numerous international competitions. Since retiring from International Competition, Dave has remained actively involved in judo and is one of the founders of HappiDojo.

At HappiDojo he primarily teaches the older children and adults, and he is the coach responsible for the in school Judo coaching. Outside of the club he is heavily involved in Eastern District British Judo Association events. He is the BJA Eastern Area Head Coach and as a BJA National Tutor and Assessor for UKCC Coaches, takes an active role in developing the skills of the next generation of Judo Coaches. He has been running a health and fitness company called Fitness Works since 1993, and as a personal fitness consultant can provide guidance to those that might also wish to take their Judo to the very highest level.

Dave occassionally has time to assist with demonstrations and introductory classes for charities/scounts/guides and other organisations.

peterPeter Edmond (1st Dan) Peter has been studying judo for over 25 years. Whilst at university he captained the Cambridge University Judo team, and participated in organising an exchange with Japan. He has competed in the British Open, and represented the Royal Navy and British Army at judo in the past. He has had an interest in other martial arts and disciplines, despite no longer actively carrying out training.

He is now qualified as a UKCC Level 2 Judo Coach, and is primarily involved with the teaching of under 8 year olds using the ‘fun’damental principles in a safe and controlled manner. He also has a general Physical Training Instructor qualification, along with the other standard requirements mandated by the Level 2 Coach award. He has been instructing at Happi Dojo since 2008.

Peter is happy to provide demonstrations, introductory sessions, or help with organisation of local Judo/Martial Arts events. So far, we have managed to iron out paperwork for a variety of events/clubs, including fundraising for local causes, and also Cubs, Scouts, Beavers and Guides.

Colin_profileColin McCallum (1st Dan) He is a highly motivated dan grade that continues to travel the country in order to compete along with his childen in Judo competitions. Colin still competes in veteran events nationally.

Colin is a UKCC Level 2 coach, and is studying for his Level 3 award this year. As an Eastern Area Committee Member he is involved in the organisation and planning of many of the bigger events in the area.

He’s a passionate and dedicated coach, and is comfortable teaching all age groups. He not only coaches in Shelford, but has managed to find time to set up a HappiDojo satellite club in Marham, and the Happidojo Iceni Academy Judo Club in Methwold.
